Quick Review

Usability, simplicity, and uniqueness — GetEmails wins big time in these areas. It’s a unique platform that can grow your retargeting campaigns as part of your digital marketing.

It takes about a minute to copy the GetEmails snippet onto your website.

Once you set it up, you can identify your website visitors across different sessions and devices. You can get their email, postal codes, and other information such as social media habits.

It can be an asset to grow your email list quickly.

There is a lot of skepticism around the legality of GetEmails. That’s why I appreciate them clearing up the confusion on their homepage.

It’s 100% LEGAL in the USA.

If you’re in Canada or Europe, it’s not legal.

The verdict?

If you are based in the USA and want to take your email marketing efforts to the next level, you’ve got to use GetEmails.

Detailed Review: How Does GetEmails Work?

For email marketers, retargeting is the ultimate ammunition in a digital marketing stratefy to get more conversions. I'm a big believer in leveraging retargeting to re-engage leads via email.

But there is one main limitation with email marketing programs.

You need to set up forms on your site to collect email addresses. It can be very annoying and off-putting to your website visitors.

I've always wanted to find an alternative way that is less pesky.

I think that's the gap that GetEmails is trying to fill in the email marketing space. It enables you to identify anonymous web traffic.

In a nutshell, you can get hundreds of addresses that you don't already have for retargeting. It can also double as a great list growth tool.

I think it's a very unique concept that can really shake up the way we do email marketing.

Before we dive into my GetEmails review, let's take a look at how the platform works.

How Does GetEmails Identify Email Addresses Without Popups?

Wondering how this list growth tool works with a digital marketing campaign?

GetEmails has a three-part process to identify email addresses of website visitors without popups. Here is how it works:

GetEmails works with a third-party cookie network to identify cookies. When a user takes action in a marketing email, GetEmails adds a cookie in their browser.

This newly added cookie includes an email address that is disguised via encryption. This cryptographic security practice is called email hashing.

Step 2: Leveraging Email Hashing

GetEmails converts each email address into a hashed form with the use of a language called

MD5.

Too technical?

I think you'll be able to understand it better with an example. Take a look at the screenshot below.

hashed email address

Image via GetEmails

The part after the “=” sign is the hashed part. As you can figure out, it's not possible to unencrypt this as a human being.

Whenever we send emails they all have unique hashes. However, it's important to note that you get the same matches for each address every time.

When one of GetEmails' cookies comes around to a website, they see this hash.

Step 3: Working With Database of Third-Party Opt-ins

GetEmails works with third-party opt-ins to get access to their databases. Once they get hold of email addresses from it, they convert them into hashed versions.

Now, let's go back to Step 1 and 2.

GetEmails identify cookies on your website and convert them into hashed email addresses.

In Step 3, they get hashed email addresses from a database of third-party opt-ins. To find people interested in your brand, they match these two lists that they've created.

If they find any matching addresses, it indicates that the person is one of your website visitors. They convert such matched versions back into normal addresses and give them to you.

Unique, right?

Using this method, GetEmails claims to be equipped to accurately identify approximately up to 35% of US internet traffic across devices and sessions.

GetEmails: Let's Review the User Experience

Now that you have a fair idea about how GetEmails works, let's review the user experience. Once you sign up and log in, here is what the UI looks like:

user experience

As you can see, the Quickstart Guide briefly explains how to get started with GetEmails.

It's quite straightforward.

The Collection Snippet option allows you to start collecting email addresses. On the other hand, the Suppression Snippet option enables you to prevent the collection of those contacts who opt-in or purchase.

Regardless of the option you choose in GetEmails, you have to provide the same information.

I'm going to click on the “Install Collection Snippet” option.

When you do that, you are redirected to a page that lets you add domains where you want to add your script.

As you can see, I've already added my domain, so it appears in the list below.

But let me walk you through the steps.

When you click on “Add Domain/Script,” a dialog box opens up where you can enter your website and choose the website builder you use.

From BigCommerce to WordPress, they have multiple options for you to choose from. For each of these categories, they also have a separate tutorial option.

Full marks for convenience and user experience.

Once you are done, go to the next step.

I want to collect email addresses, so I have chosen the “Collection” option.

your script

Image via GetEmails

While you can add the Collection script to all web pages that you want to track, I recommend that you are more selective when it comes to your digital marketing efforts.

If you add it to high intent pages, you can find people who are genuinely interested. That way, there is a smaller chance of you factoring in addresses of website visitors who may have mistakenly stumbled upon it.

As we previously discussed, the Suppression script option is for when you want to prevent the collection of the contacts who opt-in.

Basically, add the Suppression script to all pages that you don't want GetEmails to send you contacts from.

Let's jump into Order Tracking now.

If you want to track customer orders for an ecommerce site, the “Order Tracking” option is useful. With this option, you can identify all your order numbers and amounts.

When you install that script and someone places an order, it is shown on the GetEmails platform.

In the dashboard, you'll be able to check out Ecommerce Cohort Analysis. It can help you measure the ROI of your digital marketing efforts quickly.

As you can see in the screenshot above, you can find out the number of contacts you received every month and the revenue you earned.

Please note that you can't use the Suppression script and Order Tracking script simultaneously. Keep that in mind while selecting your options.

I heard that they're also working on an Abandoned Cart Program.

Once it's ready, they'll be able to send contacts of people who abandon their carts along with the contents of the cart.

That's a goldmine of information for growing your list and email retargeting.

I'm looking forward to that feature on GetEmails soon.

Integration Review: Which Email Marketing App Integration Does GetEmails Offer?

In the Quickstarter Guide, you also have the option to set up an integration with an email marketing app.

getemails offer

Image via GetEmails

As you can see in the screenshot below, they have integrations with a lot of email marketing programs. This can make it easy for you to manage your email marketing campaigns across platforms.

After you've chosen an integration of your choice, you only need to add your API key or other relevant details.

For each of these digital marketing integrations, they also have tutorials.

If you scroll down, you'll also see a bunch of customization options.

customization options

GetEmails is designed to allow you to send contacts from every page on your website to a completely different list in your email marketing app.

Based on pages that people view, you can trigger automated messaging and send emails to them.

Select all relevant options — that's all there is to set up your integration.

Once the setup is done, just click on the enable button.

If you want to send different contacts from a different page to a different email service provider, you can do that too.

Alternatively, you can create a different list by setting up another integration with the same email service provider.

I think the integration part is pretty well thought out.

Since GetEmails sends visitor data in real-time, they recommend that you send emails with a welcome message immediately.

Strike the iron when it's hot.

However, that part needs to be done within your email marketing app.

How to Prevent Collection of Duplicate Data on GetEmails?

If I already have a contact, why should I pay GetEmails to send the same email address to me? Makes sense, right?

GetEmails have a workaround to avoid the collection of duplicate data.

Here is how you can ensure that you pay only for the contacts you don't have.

In the Quickstart Guide, the fourth option shows you different ways you can prevent duplicate data collection.

To automate the process, you can enable the automated suppression option via your email service provider integration.

But what if you want to add a selected list of contacts?

You can manually upload an external list through the Suppression Lists option. Keep in mind that you can add a .CSV file that is a maximum of 100 MB in size.

GetEmails: Picking Your Pricing Plan

The final step in the Quickstarter Guide in GetEmails is to pick your pricing plan. To see where to find the option, check the screenshot below.

Here, you can add a coupon code or make sure you get a reminder if you near your plan limit.

That's all the basic stuff.

Let's talk about the pricing plan. Usually, while writing a review, I don't dwell on the pricing details of any tool because you can just check it out on their website.

In this case, I am going to talk about it a bit more.

That's because there are so many options you can choose from.

options for data delivery

Image via GetEmails

  • Options for Data Delivery: Real-time OR Once a day
  • Data Options and User Details:
    • Basic: Only Email Address
    • Essential: Email Address and Name
    • Premium: Name, Address, and Email Address
  • Contacts Per Month:
    • Up to 50 Contacts: $19 per month
    • Up to 200 Contacts: $64 per month
    • And More!

As you can see, GetEmails doesn't have a rigid pricing structure.

The total cost of your plan depends on your requirements and budget. Essentially, you craft your own plan.

I am a big fan of this kind of flexible pricing model.

You pay only for what you need.

GetEmails FAQs

Q1. Is GetEmails legal?

A. Yes, GetEmails is legal in the USA. You should note that their email database contains addresses only in the USA. The US CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 clearly states that you don't need to have an opt-in for email marketing in the US.

GetEmails is also CCPA-compliant.

However, GetEmails is NOT legal in Europe and Canada. It is a platform that is not CASL or GDPR compliant. In their database, they have no addresses for Canadian or European emails.

Q2. Is data provided by GetEmails up-to-date?

A. Yes, GetEmails claims to keep the data updated. On their website, they have mentioned that they clean the data once every couple of weeks. During this process, they remove all the bounces.

Q3. Is it possible to find out which web page a contact came from?

A. Yes, you can find out the exact landing page from where a contact comes from. GetEmails provides this information for all contacts.

Please note that GetEmails tracks contacts on the first page that they visit that contains the script. Even if they do go to other pages, you'll get the details of the first page that they visited that included the script.

Q4. Is it possible to get a lot of spam complaints?

A. Yes.

To avoid this, GetEmails recommends adding their script to high intent pages. It's a quick way to filter out contacts who may happen to visit your pages by accident. It can also help you weed out website visitors who bounce off your site quickly.

Q5. How is web retargeting with GetEmails different from retargeting on Facebook or Google?

A. On Facebook and Google, you pay for each ad click that you get. But GetEmails works very differently. You pay to get the email address of a contact just once but you can send emails and follow up with them whenever you want.

Q6. Does GetEmails work the same way as an abandoned cart program?

A. GetEmails' soon-to-be-launched abandoned cart program is going to be different than the others out there.

In an abandoned cart program, you can send emails to those who are on your email list and have abandoned their carts. That can be a bit limiting.

When you run an abandoned cart program with GetEmails, you can identify as well as retarget people who have abandoned their carts but aren't on your mailing list.

Q7. Can I get a refund from GetEmails?

A. Yes.

After you place a refund request, their billing team reviews each request within 30 days on a case-by-case basis.

They do NOT provide refunds for an account that is terminated or suspended.

Q8. How accurate is the data provided by GetEmails?

A. GetEmails clearly mentions on their website that the accuracy of the data they provide is NOT 100%. Plus, they have stated that up to a 2% bounce rate can also occur because of the way the data refreshes over a given period of time.

In a nutshell, errors can occur, but not in the majority of the given data.

For bounce rates that are above 2%, GetEmails may provide account credit at their own discretion.

To get the account credit, you must be able to provide the following:

  • All the addresses that you sent emails to
  • Total bounce rate
  • Bounce code that is returned by your server

Q9. Will I have to pay the monthly charge if I turn off the script?

A. Yes, all their plans are billed on a monthly basis regardless of whether your script is turned on or off. Even if you aren't collecting any contacts actively, you will be charged.

To stop your GetEmails monthly payments, you need to cancel your account via their interface.

Q10. Do credits roll over in my GetEmails account?

A. Credits do roll over for accounts that are prepaid or pay-as-you-go. But you need to log in to your GetEmails account at least once in a year (12 months). If you don't log in, your account along with the content may be permanently deleted from their system.

Q11. How can I get in touch with their team for any issues?

A. You can check out the Support tab on their website to get answers to FAQs. Alternatively, you can also use the live chat option from your GetEmails account to get answers to your questions.

GetEmails Review: What's the Final Verdict?

GetEmails is all set to change the way you grow your email lists and do email retargeting.

The best part is that it has integrations with all popular email service providers, so it's easy to send emails to anyone. It doesn't matter which one you use; GetEmails can be a valuable complementary tool.

Because the concept is novel and all the features are unlike anything you might have come across before, you may get overwhelmed.

You may take a while to understand how to set up “Order Tracking” or create your own “Suppression List.”

The learning curve may be a bit steep for some people.

But here's the good part:

GetEmails has a ton of educational resources. From exhaustive tutorials to detailed blog posts, there is a lot of content to guide you.

Overall:

Powerful concept, great usability!

Would recommend it!
