With the 2012 World Series in sight, the San Francisco Giants are the hottest team in sports.  But did you know they’re also the most talked about team on social media?

Fresh out of the third game of the World Series, the official Twitter home of the Giants, @SFGiants has 342,000 followers.  Just reading some of the tweets from the official site and the fan response demonstrates the excitement during Game 3:

#SFGiants lead 2-0 as @BCraw35 delivers 2-out run-scoring single

Within minutes of this posting, there were retweets and comments like:

@SFGiants @bcraw35 whoop whooop!” and “@SFGiants @bcraw35 THAT'S WHY HE'S THE MAN!!!!!!”

Vogelsong was on fire in Game 3. Not only was he busy striking out Tigers, his performance was reaching a fever pitch with fans.  Twitter read like a play-by-play and within a minute 260 fans had retweeted in support.

The reach of social media doesn’t stop there. Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford has close to 40,000 followers on his own Twitter account.  So even when fans are not watching the game, they are using social media to engage with their favorite players.

It’s not just Twitter hashtags that are hot.  The SF Giants fan page on Facebook just surpassed 25,000 likes and 83,000 people are talking about it.  With the Giants winning Game 3 of the World Series, those numbers will continue to grow.  The Giants are killing the Tigers in social media too — the Tigers fan page only has 2,300 likes.

No team has ever come back in the World Series after being down 3-0.  Looks like it’s quite an #OrangeOctober for Giants fans.
