Trends in social media come and go. From challenges to viral moments, there are so many bandwagons your brand can jump on to ride the wave and get more eyes on your product. However, not all trends are created equal. While some may be perfect fits that make your brand look cooler, jumping on some trends can make you look like the “How do you do, fellow kids?” meme because your attempt to look cool feels forced.

Which trends should you follow, and which ones should you skip? Uncle Shane’s got you. In this article, I’ll reveal how to identify emerging social media trends before your competition, smartly capitalize on them without compromising your brand, and build a system that keeps you consistently ahead of the curve.

Whether you’re managing social for a Fortune 500 company or growing your personal brand, these strategies will help you stop playing catch-up and start leading the conversation.

Let’s take a quick look at what I’ll be discussing this time around:

    • How to spot social media trends before they peak (and before your competitors notice)
    • A practical framework for deciding which trends are worth your time.
    • Actionable steps to create trend-driven content that actually resonates.
    • Common mistakes and best practices in trend identification and capitalization.
    • How to balance trend following and original content.

Before we get into any of that, let’s start with the basics and learn more about social media trends.

    What Are Social Media Trends?

Before diving deeper, let’s clarify what we mean by social media trends. Social media trends are waves of content, topics, or formats that gain significant popularity across platforms for a period of time. They might emerge as viral hashtags, popular challenges, widely shared cultural moments, meme formats, or even new ways of using platform features.

What makes something a trend rather than just popular content is its momentum and widespread adoption. Trends have a life cycle: they emerge, peak, and eventually fade as newer trends take their place. Some trends last for months (like certain content formats), while others might be relevant for just a few days (like a reaction to a news event).

Social media trends matter because they command massive public attention. With billions of people active on social platforms, trending content gets prioritized by algorithms and can dramatically increase your reach and engagement when leveraged effectively.

Why Most Brands Fail at Trend Marketing

Now that we understand what trends are let’s address why so many brands miss the boat completely or jump on them in ways that fall flat or backfire.

The social media landscape is cluttered with companies trying to capitalize on the latest viral sensation, and most of them are doing it wrong. The proof is in your feed: those awkward brand posts that feel like your dad is trying to use slang at the dinner table. Instead of looking cool, you’re probably going to see a lot of people dunking on those posts in response.

The Fear-Based Approach to Trend Marketing

Most marketing teams take one of two problematic approaches to trends:

    1. The “Wait and See” Approach: They spot a trend, schedule three meetings to discuss it, get approval from legal, and by the time they post, the moment has passed. This approach stems from the fear of moving too quickly and making mistakes.
    2. The “Jump on Everything” Approach: They desperately try to insert their brand into every trending conversation, regardless of relevance. This comes from the fear of missing out (FOMO) and results in content that feels forced and inauthentic.

Both approaches miss the mark because they’re driven by fear rather than strategy.

Social media trends aren’t for every brand, and you should be deliberately sitting out more trends than you join. The brands that excel at trend marketing are selective, not comprehensive.

    What’s Actually at Stake

Let’s talk about what you have to gain (and lose) in the trend marketing game.

When done right, trend-driven content can deliver explosive reach beyond your usual audience. It creates a perception of cultural relevance and brand vitality that’s hard to achieve through standard content. You’ll often see organic growth in followers and engagement as new people discover your brand through trending topics. Perhaps most importantly, it offers opportunities for authentic connection with your audience by participating in the same cultural moments they care about.

But the potential downsides are equally significant. Poorly executed trend marketing risks making your brand appear tone-deaf or opportunistic. You might waste valuable resources on minimal return if you choose the wrong trends or execute them poorly. Over time, chasing too many disparate trends can dilute your brand identity and confuse your audience about what you stand for. In worst-case scenarios, misreading a trend’s context or implications can create a full-blown PR crisis that damages your reputation.

With these stakes in mind, it’s no wonder marketers are hesitant. But there’s a middle path that minimizes the risks while maximizing the rewards.

The Trend Identification System That Actually Works

The first step to capitalizing on trends is spotting them early. Not when they’re already mainstream but when they’re building momentum. This gives you time to craft a thoughtful response while still being timely.

Beyond the Trending Tab: Where Trends Really Start

Here’s something most marketers miss: By the time something appears in a platform’s “Trending” section, it’s often too late to be an early adopter. The real opportunity lies in identifying trends as they’re forming.

Think of social media trends like waves. You don’t want to catch them at their peak; you want to spot them as they’re building so you can ride the wave as it builds.

So, where should you be looking? You should be looking at the leading indicators. Trends typically follow a pattern before they go mainstream. They start in niche communities, get amplified by influencers, and then break into the general conversation. By monitoring these initial stages, you can get ahead of the curve.

Some practical ways to do this include:

    1. Monitor Influencer Activity

Influencers are often the bridge between niche communities and the mainstream. By following a diverse set of influencers in your industry, you can spot emerging patterns.

I recommend creating a private list of 20-30 influencers in your space and checking it daily. Look for recurring themes, new formats, or conversations that seem to be gaining unusual traction.

    2. Set Up a Social Listening Dashboard

Tools like Hootsuite, Brandwatch, or even free options like TweetDeck can be configured to monitor specific keywords, hashtags, and conversations. The key is to look for sudden spikes in activity around particular topics.

For example, if you’re in the fitness industry, you might track terms like “workout challenge” or “fitness hack.” When you see a significant uptick in mentions, it could signal an emerging trend.

    3. Explore Niche Communities

Reddit, Discord servers, and specialized forums are often where trends originate before hitting mainstream platforms. Spend time in these communities to spot what people are getting excited about.

I like to check relevant subreddits for my clients’ industries at least twice a week. You’d be surprised how often you’ll spot a conversation that bubbles up to Instagram or TikTok a week later.

    4. Use Trend Prediction Tools

While not foolproof, tools like Google Trends, BuzzSumo, and Exploding Topics can help identify subjects gaining momentum. These tools analyze search and social data to spot upward trajectories.

The Controversial Truth About Platform “Trending” Sections

Here’s something that might ruffle some feathers: Most platform “trending” sections are increasingly useless for marketers. They’re often manipulated by coordinated campaigns, influenced by platform algorithms with commercial interests, or simply too broad to be actionable.

Instead of relying on what platforms tell you are trending, build your own trend radar based on actual audience behavior and engagement patterns.

The Four Types of Social Media Trends Worth Your Attention

Not all trends are created equal. Understanding the different categories can help you decide which ones deserve your attention:

    1. Format Trends

These are new ways of presenting content. Think TikTok transitions, Instagram carousel formats, or LinkedIn carousel posts. Format trends tend to have longer lifespans and lower risk.

    2. Challenge/Participation Trends

These invite user participation, like the Ice Bucket Challenge or TikTok dances. They offer high engagement potential but require quick action.

    3. Cultural Moment Trends

These revolve around events, holidays, or viral news stories. They can provide relevant touchpoints but often have a short shelf life.

    4. Platform Feature Trends

These emerge when platforms release new features (like Stories, Reels, or Communities). Early adopters often get algorithmic preferences.

Understanding which category a trend falls into helps you assess its potential value and longevity. Format trends, for instance, typically give you more time to respond thoughtfully, while cultural moments may require immediate action.

The Decision Framework: Which Trends Deserve Your Attention?

Now that you know how to spot trends early, the next question is, which ones should you actually engage with?

This is where most brands go wrong. They try to jump on everything, or they’re so paralyzed by decision anxiety that they miss opportunities entirely.

The Four-Question Test for Any Social Media Trend

I use a simple four-question framework to evaluate trends quickly:

    1. Relevance: Does this trend align with our brand values and audience interests?

The trend should have a natural connection to what your brand stands for or what your audience cares about. Don’t force it.

    1. Timing: Are we early enough to benefit from this trend?

If a trend is already peaking or declining, you might be too late to gain significant traction.

    1. Execution: Can we add something unique to this trend?

If you can’t put your own spin on it or add value, you’ll just be another forgettable participant.

    1. Risk: What’s the potential downside?

Consider both brand risk (does this align with our image?) and execution risk (can we pull this off well?).

If you can answer positively to all four questions, you’ve found a trend worth pursuing.

The “80/20 Rule” of Trend Marketing

Here’s my approach to trend marketing: Only engage with about 20% of the trends you identify. Be extremely selective.

Those that make the cut should receive 80% of their creative energy. In other words, it’s better to execute brilliantly on a few relevant trends than to participate mediocrely in many.

This selective approach ensures that when your audience sees you engaging with a trend, they know it will be worthwhile, not just another brand jumping on the bandwagon.

From Identification to Execution: Making Trends Work for You

Spotting a valuable trend is just the beginning. The real challenge is executing in a way that feels authentic and drives results.

Speed vs. Quality: Finding the Sweet Spot

The tension between moving quickly and maintaining quality is real. Here’s how to balance them:

    1. Build trend response templates: Have basic creative templates ready that can be quickly adapted to trend-driven content.
    2. Create a streamlined approval process: Establish a quick-response team with pre-approved guidelines for trend participation.
    3. Start small, then scale: Test a trend with a simple execution first (like a tweet or story). If it gains traction, invest in more elaborate content.

This approach allows you to be nimble without sacrificing brand standards.

Adding Your Unique Brand Voice to Any Trend

The most successful trend executions don’t just follow the format, they bring something fresh to it. Here’s how to stand out:

    Connect to Your Core Message

Find ways to tie the trend back to your brand’s core message or value proposition. This makes your participation feel natural, not forced.

Duolingo masterfully does this by having its owl mascot participate in trending formats while subtly reinforcing language learning. When the Barbie movie was trending, they didn’t just post random Barbie content; they sent their mascot to the premiere in a Barbie outfit, creating content that was both on-trend and on-brand.

    Use Your Unique Assets

Your brand has unique assets: a mascot, a signature color, a distinctive voice, or proprietary content. Use these to put your stamp on the trend.

IKEA’s quick renaming of a water bottle to “Cristiano” after Ronaldo’s viral water bottle moment is a perfect example. They used their product and naming convention to create a clever connection to a trending news story.

The Content Creation Process for Trend-Driven Posts

Here’s a practical workflow for creating trend-driven content:

    1. Research the trend’s origin and context: Understand where it came from to avoid potential pitfalls.
    2. Monitor early examples: See how others are executing it before finalizing your approach.
    3. Brainstorm your unique angle: How can you tie this to your brand in a way that feels natural?
    4. Rapid prototyping: Create a quick draft to test internally.
    5. Execute and post: Move quickly once you’ve decided on your approach.
    6. Engage actively: Don’t just post and ghost; participate in the conversation around the trend.

This process typically needs to happen within hours, not days, so having dedicated resources is crucial.

Best Practices for Capitalizing on Social Media Trends

Now that we’ve covered how to identify and evaluate trends, let’s discuss the best practices that will help you execute trend marketing effectively.

    Move Quickly But Thoughtfully

Speed matters in trend marketing, but not at the expense of thoughtfulness. Create a streamlined approval process for trend-related content that allows you to respond quickly while still maintaining quality control. Set up response templates that can be quickly adapted to different types of trends, reducing the time from identification to execution.

Consider implementing a tiered approach: tier one trends that align perfectly with your brand might get full campaign treatment, while tier two or three trends might just warrant a quick social post or story.

    Maintain Your Authentic Brand Voice

Even when participating in trends, your unique brand voice should shine through. If your brand is known for being educational, maintain that approach even with lighthearted trends. If humor is your trademark, bring that sensibility to more serious trends (when appropriate).

The goal is for your audience to recognize your brand’s personality even when you’re participating in the same trend as everyone else. This consistency builds trust and reinforces your brand identity rather than diluting it.

    Focus on Adding Value

The most successful trend participation adds something to the conversation rather than just repeating what others have done. Ask yourself: “What unique perspective or value can we bring to this trend?”

This might mean offering an insider view of your industry, creating a helpful resource related to the trend, or simply bringing exceptional creativity to your execution. When you add value, your content stands out even in a crowded trend.

    Consider Your Full Marketing Mix

Trend marketing doesn’t exist in isolation. Consider how your trend participation fits within your broader marketing strategy. Can you tie trending content back to your products or services in a natural way? Could you extend a successful trend-driven post into other marketing channels?

The most effective trend marketing happens when it’s integrated with, not siloed from, your overall marketing approach.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced marketers can stumble when it comes to trend marketing. Here’s a little forewarning of the common mistakes you may commit when following and capitalizing on trends.

    Misreading the Trend’s Context

One of the most damaging mistakes is failing to understand a trend’s full context before participating. Always research where a trend originated and what conversations are happening around it. A hashtag that seems fun or innocent might have a serious backstory or controversial associations you should know about.

Several brands have faced backlash after using hashtags tied to sensitive social issues or tragedies without realizing their significance. Always do your homework before joining the conversation.

Forcing Your Brand Into Irrelevant Trends

Not every trend makes sense for every brand. Forcing your company into conversations that have no natural connection to your industry or values makes you look desperate and out of touch.

Be selective and focus only on trends where you can add value or make an authentic connection. It’s better to sit out ten irrelevant trends than to awkwardly insert yourself into a conversation where you don’t belong.

    Prioritizing Speed Over Strategy

While timing is important, rushing into a trend without a strategic approach often backfires. Some brands are so afraid of missing out that they post without proper consideration of how the content aligns with their goals and values.

Take the time to consider your angle, execution, and potential risks before participating. A few extra minutes of planning can save you from a major misstep.

Overwhelming Your Audience With Trend Content

If your feed becomes nothing but reactions to trends, you’ll dilute your brand’s unique voice and purpose. Balance trend participation with your core content strategy so your audience still receives the value they follow you for.

The 80/20 rule is helpful here: limit trend-driven content to about 20% of your overall social calendar, with your core brand messaging making up the remaining 80%.

Finding Balance in Your Trend Marketing Approach

As you build your trend marketing strategy, remember that balance is key. Too much emphasis on trends can make your brand seem shallow and opportunistic while ignoring trends entirely can make you appear out of touch.

    Blending Planned and Responsive Content

The most effective social media strategies combine planned content (that supports your core messaging and campaigns) with responsive content (that capitalizes on relevant trends and timely opportunities). Think of it as having a strong foundation with room for flexibility.

Many successful brands operate on a 70/30 split: 70% planned content that aligns with their marketing calendar and strategic objectives, and 30% responsive content that allows them to participate in relevant conversations as they emerge.

    Quality Over Quantity

Remember that your brand doesn’t need to participate in every trend to be successful. In fact, being more selective often leads to better results. Focus on creating exceptional content for a few perfectly aligned trends rather than mediocre content for many tangential ones.

When your audience sees your brand participating in a trend, they should think, “This makes sense for them,” rather than “They’re trying too hard.”

    Measuring Your Trend Marketing Success

Like any marketing effort, your trend participation should be measured and evaluated. Track metrics like:

    • Reach and engagement relative to your non-trend content.
    • New follower acquisition during trend participation.
    • Traffic or conversions generated from trend-driven posts.
    • Sentiment of responses to your trend content.

Use these insights to refine your approach over time. You may discover that certain types of trends consistently perform well for your brand while others fall flat.

    Key Takeaways

Social media trends are about more than staying relevant. They’re also about connecting with your audience in the cultural moments that matter to them. The most successful brands don’t blindly follow trends; they selectively participate in ones that align with their values and add their unique perspective.

    Let’s summarize what we’ve learned:

    • Social media trends are most valuable when identified early. Build systems to spot them as they’re forming, not after they’ve peaked.
    • Use the four-question test (Relevance, Timing, Execution, Risk) to quickly evaluate which trends are worth your time.
    • Apply the 80/20 rule: Engage with only 20% of trends, but put 80% of your creative energy into those you choose.
    • Success comes from adding your unique brand perspective to trends, not just copying what everyone else is doing.
    • Build a sustainable trend response system with clear team roles, tools, and decision-making guidelines.

By approaching trends strategically rather than reactively, you can transform them from fleeting opportunities into consistent drivers of engagement and growth.

Remember, the goal is to participate in the right trends in the right way, not get onto every bandwagon you see. Be selective, be authentic, and most importantly, be yourself. Your audience will appreciate it.

Here’s some homework for you: Take a look at the trends your social media team jumped onto in the past few months. Are they aligned with your brand, or are you following trends that have nothing to do with it? Either way, it’s a good idea to double-check your trend-following strategy and tweak it to ensure you’re capitalizing on the right trends and not just hitching any bandwagon that passes by.
