Adding spaces in Instagram isn’t rocket science. Yet many people have trouble getting it right.
Most people are on Instagram so they can consume content that’s entertaining and/or aesthetically pleasing. They’re not there to read a story. So coming across a lengthy, unformatted caption can irk them. The same goes for unformatted bios that are just plain messy.
But for some brands and influencers, there are times you need to write a lengthy message for your caption. In such a case, adding spaces in-between lines isn’t something you can just overlook. You need to add a break to improve readability.
For instance, maybe you need to create a post to promote a contest or giveaway. And you need to make sure that you include all of the details about how to enter and some important disclaimers in the caption.
So you obviously need a lengthy caption for this.
As for your Instagram bio, you need to make sure that you list all your important achievements when describing yourself.
You may have a lot of information to share through your captions, hashtags, and bio. But that means you’ll risk making it too difficult to read without proper formatting. In which case, you’ll end up losing the interest of people you’re trying to impress or engage.
That’s why I decided to write this blog post to guide you on how to add spaces in your Instagram captions and bios.
In this post, you’ll gain a better understanding of all of the steps you need to take to properly format your captions and bios to attract and engage your audience.
How to Add Spaces on Instagram: Best Practices to Follow
Before I discuss the steps you can follow to add spaces in your Instagram captions and bios, there are a few best practices that you need to remember.
Following these best practices for adding spaces on Instagram will help you minimize frustration while trying to properly format your captions and bios:
#1: Avoid Writing Directly on the Instagram App
You might be reading this blog post right now because you’ve tried formatting your IG captions and bios right in the Instagram app and it didn’t work.
If you try to add paragraph and line spacing within the app, it will automatically publish your post with zero-spaced formatting. And this is a major cause of frustration for anyone who knows that good formatting works but hasn’t been able to successfully format their Instagram captions and bios.
So, how can you add spaces in your Instagram captions?
So instead of directly writing your caption within the app, try writing it in your phone’s Notes app first. You can then copy and paste this finished copy into the app when you’re publishing a new post. You can even use your email app to create a draft of your caption copy.
So, what’s the bottom line here? What should you keep in mind to add spaces between paragraphs on Instagram?
The main rule to keep is that you should avoid writing directly on the Instagram app because you cannot format it correctly that way.
#2: Take Out Extra Spaces
Another solution to fixing your spacing issues — take out all the extra spaces in Instagram captions.
If your invisible line break is going to work, you need to take out the extra space between the last word or punctuation and an invisible space.
For example, if you’re finishing a sentence with a full stop, avoid hitting the space button like you would normally do. Instead, hit the “Enter” or “Return” button right after and then add the invisible space.
How to Add Spaces in Instagram Captions and Bios: 3 Different Ways Explained
There are several ways to add spaces in your Instagram captions and bios. You can choose from the following options, depending on what’s preferable and convenient for you.
Option 1 to Add Spaces: Make Line Breaks With Symbols
The easiest way to add spaces in your Instagram captions and bios is by using symbols. It’s also the fastest option and you can still type directly into the Instagram app. You can use characters like a dash or a period, as well as emojis wherever you need a line break. And this extra character will act as the space between paragraphs.
The main problem with this option for adding spaces in Instagram captions is that the symbol will be visible, which might not make it viable for some people. In the screenshot below, you can see a line break added using a period as a symbol.

Here’s how you can add spaces using this option:
- Type your caption into the caption area on Instagram.
- When you need a line break, tap on the “Enter” or “Return” button on your keypad.
- Add the symbol in the next line. You could add a period to make it as minimally visible as possible.
- Tap on “Enter” or “Return” again and start typing the next paragraph.
- If you want more spaces between two paragraphs, you can keep repeating steps 1 and 2 as needed.
Option 2 to Add Spaces: Make Invisible Line Breaks With Your Phone’s Notes App
What if you don’t want lines or symbols in your Instagram captions? There is another trick through which you can add spaces.
If you want to add invisible line breaks, there’s a way to do it using the Notes app on your phone. If you use any scheduling app, you can also use that to create your draft instead of the Notes app.
Here are the steps you need to follow to add invisible line breaks using this option:
Type your caption in the app.
- When you need to add a line break, paste these invisible spaces in the next line. The spaces are inside the brackets.
- Paste it multiple times if you want to add more than one line break.
- Remove the brackets.
- Copy the whole draft and then paste it into the Instagram caption space, if you’re using a Notes app.
If you’re using a scheduling app to type your draft, you can just send it to Instagram as usual. You will see the line breaks automatically copied along with the rest of the copy. Just post it as is and Instagram will publish your caption with the necessary spaced formatting.
