FAQs for SpyFu

Q1. How accurate are the results from SpyFu?

A. SpyFu runs millions of searches every month with every keyword that you can possibly imagine. Out of that, they take the top 50 organic results and the top 2 pages of ads and put them together in their database.

All the information that you see on SpyFu  — organic rank, ad, and others — is traceable back to the SERP that they came across on Google. This means you can verify the source.

They cache pages of all the Google SERP that they capture. Since the time SpyFu started collecting data (more than a decade ago), they have been keeping a screenshot of SERPs.

This means that when SpyFu gives you data, they are able to back it up.

However, information like cost per click, search volume, and other information related to spending may not be exactly accurate. They get that data from Google Keyword Planner which is based on estimates.

Sometimes, these estimates may be off. Because the input is inaccurate, the results from SpyFu for all organic rankings and advertisers are inaccurate.

However, the good part is that when SpyFu’s estimates are off, they are like that for the entire industry. So, the trick to get a better understanding is to use your own domain as your reference point.

If the results show that your spending is half than what it actually is, you know how to adjust the results for your competitors as well.

Q2. Which countries does SpyFu collect their data in?

A. SpyFu shows data only from and They obtain their data from searches that come from the UK and the US.

If websites from other countries do rank high and show up in the results, then SpyFu can include them.

However, SpyFu does not have access to full results for any other countries except the UK and the US. They do have national data for the UK and the US.

Moreover, SpyFu’s results are not broken down into particular areas. They aren’t geo-targeted either.

Q3. Why can’t you see any results on SpyFu for a specific domain?

A. New domains may not yield any results on SpyFu. That’s because SpyFu checks out websites based on their keywords.

If a domain isn’t ranking organically and not even buying ads, it’s not possible for the tool to know that it exists.

However, once a website does rank for a keyword, it stays in SpyFu’s database.

What if you are ranking for keywords but your domain still does not show up? In such a case, it’s likely that your keywords have still not been added to SpyFu’s keyword data registry.

There is also another case scenario possible here.

You know that you are ranking for a keyword that is added to SpyFu’s database. Yet, you can’t see any results on SpyFu.

Why is that?

It’s likely that a particular site is showing up on localized searches only.

For instance, if you are putting out an ad in Minnesota and you rank on a keyword that is in SpyFu’s database, you are likely to see results that show up exclusively in your local IPs.

Keep in mind that SpyFu is designed to take data from Google from the most neutral place., so localized results do not affect their data.

Q4. Does SpyFu offer a free trial?

A. SpyFu does not offer a free trial. However, you can check out the free version of the tool to see how it works.

While SpyFu’s free version gives you access to reports with basic metrics, you need to subscribe to the paid plans for access to premium features.

To use the free version for SpyFu, all you need to do is go to their website and type your keyword in the main search bar. The best part is that there is no limit to how you can use this feature for free.

Q5. How does SpyFu’s 30-day money-back guarantee work?

A. You can try SpyFu without any obligations. If you subscribe to the paid plan and find that the tool doesn’t live up to your expectations, you can get a refund.

The only condition is that you need to contact SpyFu within the first 30 days of your subscription.

It’s as easy as that. You can expect their representatives on the other end of the call or live chat will start processing your request right away.

Q6. How can you cancel your SpyFu subscription?

A. Cancelling your SpyFu subscription is easy.

You can get in touch with SpyFu’s team via Twitter (@SpyFu), phone, live chat, or email (

Once you reach out to them, they will process your cancellation request.

Alternatively, you can also use the link for “Subscription” that you can find in your account’s drop down menu.

However, do keep in mind that you will still need to contact them via any of the above-mentioned mediums.

That way, you can trigger the refund/cancellation request. You will need to request for it; it isn’t automatic.

Q7. How can you upgrade your plan?

A. Go to your SpyFu dashboard and check the upper right corner of your home page. You’ll see a button for “Upgrade” there placed right below the section where your username is displayed.

What’s more, you don’t need to wait for your subscription cycle to end to upgrade your plan. You can drop in a message via live chat for help regarding upgradation.

Based on the request, SpyFu’s team will prorate your monthly payment towards the new plan.

Q8. Which search engines does SpyFu track?

A. In addition to Google, SpyFu recently added Yahoo/Bing results to their tracking updates as well. This feature rounds up rankings from Bing and Google for SEO keywords that you select.

It’s based on what you choose in the Recon Keyword Ranking Reports or SEO keywords or  PPC in the Weekly Tracking feature.

However, SpyFu’s massive keyword database that is mainly used for their features comes from Google. So, features like keyword overview, Ad History, domain overview, and others are mainly dependent on Google data.

“Honestly, I love SpyFu. I love this software because the charts are beautiful, it's easy to see what your competition is up to, and it helps us target our efforts and keep up with the big guys without the same budget. “

“SpyFu is unparalleled at analyzing paid campaigns. While most competitor research tools struggle to provide accurate data on smaller campaigns, SpyFu can succeed at this. Once again, the lower price point and local options make it the right tool for many digital agencies.”

Semrush vs SpyFu: What’s The Final Verdict?

We’ve now sized up the key features, pricing plans, and user experience of Semrush vs SpyFu. We’ve even checked out the pros and cons of both tools.

So, which one should you choose — Semrush or SpyFu?

When it comes to SEO capabilities and keyword research, Semrush has a lot more on offer.

I also believe that its SEO reports are more detailed. They are especially designed for the advanced marketer.

But SpyFu does win in another department.

SpyFu provides you with information like anchor text and link URL along with their backlinks. When you put it all together, it is extremely informative and can help you decode your competitors’ strategy.

Coming to the price point, SpyFu is much more affordable. However, Semrush offers rich functionality and access to a host of tools in its basic plan.

Both SpyFu and Semrush have different USPs.

In my opinion, for freelancers, small business owners, or new agencies who might not have a big budget, SpyFu is a good pick. But for those who do have deeper pockets and want more functionality, Semrush could provide more value.

Final verdict?

It’s a draw.

Sort of.
